Bubble Tea: DIY Carnival Costume from Things You Have at Home

Bubble Tea is a fun and colorful drink that has become a real sensation, making it a perfect choice for a trendy carnival costume. The pearls and the noticeable straw are key pieces of this homemade costume.

DIY Bubble Tea Costume Materials:

  • A pastel-colored sweater, tunic, or T-shirt (pink, mint, yellow, or violet)
  • Colored beads (we used old string lights beads, but you can also use pompoms, paper balls, or foam balls)
  • A large cardboard tube or paper towel roll (for the straw)
  • Elastic band, ribbon, or tights (to hold the straw on your head)
  • Shoulder pads
  • Craft supplies: paint, glue, scissors, thread and needle, double-sided tape, clear plastic folder, or plastic cup

How to Make a Bubble Tea Carnival Costume:

1. The Pearls: Tapioca pearls are essential for any Bubble Tea costume. Create small balls from paper or yarn in your chosen colors to resemble real tapioca pearls. We used beads from old string lights (thanks to Smile Concept Store) and spray-painted them in desired colors. We sewed them onto the sweater so it could still be worn after the carnival.

Tapioca pearls? Look around your house for anything that could resemble them.

2. The Straw: For a giant straw, use a cardboard tube (like from paper towel rolls), painted in any color (pink, blue, yellow, etc.). Attach it to a headband or elastic to keep it upright. We found that a wider straw stands out more, so we used a sturdier tube (from a roll of paper tablecloths), painted it, and secured it with a flexible plastic insert sewn onto a thick felt circle. We used a piece of old tights to hold it on the head.

Insert a plastic cup or sturdy plastic sheet into the tube and cut it into strips.

Trim the strips so they don’t extend past the edge of the thick felt base. We attached the plastic strips to the felt by sewing.

Measuring the straw… if you look closely, it’s already marked to trim off a few centimeters.

3. Comfortable Clothing: To give the sweater a bubble tea shape, we removed the sleeves and added shoulder pads (or triangular bikini inserts). Wear pastel clothes to represent your favorite bubble tea flavor: pink for strawberry, green for matcha, yellow for mango, etc.

We used clothes we already had and plan to wear them even after the carnival.

4. Cute Details: Add fun details like eyes, cup handles, or even your favorite bubble tea flavor name on the front. We used adhesive foil for easy removal after the carnival.
